Signed JEEPA – Japan-EU Economic Partnership Agreement. The goal of this agreement is to remove protectionist measures (within the next 10 years) and adjust global trade rules to high standards. Negotiations started back in 2013, but were only actualized with Trump’s withdrawal from the trade agreement between America and Europe (TTP) and his insistence on new frameworks within NAFTA. European companies that export to the Japanese market (they pay over 1 billion euros in export duties annually) face protectionist measures (trade barriers), which makes their competitive position difficult. The average customs duty on agricultural products is high (21%). The agreement would reduce tariffs on beef, pork and wine (eliminating 85% of tariffs on products exported to Japan), as well as on textiles and footwear (from 30% to 21%, and then to 0% over the next 10 years).
