Banks were analyzed only on the basis of official NBS data. The trend of reducing the number of banks on the market has been ignored, even though this is a business result. The trend of bank mergers and takeovers is a consequence of the owners’ desire to reduce operating costs and maintain return on equity capital and assets. This is achieved through economies of scale and expanding the client base. Intesa Bank bought part of the loan portfolio of ProCredit Bank in 2018. OTP banka bought Vojvođanska banka in 2017 and Societe Banka in 2019. NLB bought Komerijclan banka in 2020.
