Američka potrošnja se ne smanjuje uprkos inflaciji (US spending is not shrinking despite inflation)

Amerikanci nastavljaju da troše novac i pored inflacije i ekonomske neizvesnosti. Prodaja na malo je porasla u julu 2024 (1.0%) iznad očekivanog nivoa (0.3%). Raste potrošnja istih proizvoda uprkos većim cenama. Maloprodaja je nadmašila inflaciju.

Potrošačka potrošnja ne posustaje u SAD. Uprkos inflaciji, Amerikanci su nastavili da troše novac. Ukupna maloprodaja i prodaja prehrambenih usluga – uključujući potrošnju u prodavnicama, na mreži i u restoranima – iznosila je 709,7 milijardi dolara u julu, što je 1,0 odsto više u odnosu na jun (iznad predviđanje ekonomista od 0,3%). To je najveći rast od januara 2023. godine, pri čemu je najviše porasla prodaja kod dilera motornih vozila i delova (3,6%), a zatim prodaja u prodavnicama elektronike i uređaja (1,6%). Americans continue to spend money despite inflation and economic uncertainty. In July 2024, retail sales increased (1.0%) above the expected level (0.3%). Consumption of the same products is growing despite higher prices. Retail sales outpaced inflation.

US consumer spending is not slowing down. Despite inflation, Americans continued to spend money. Total retail and food service sales — including in-store, online, and restaurant spending — totaled $709.7 billion in July, up 1.0 percent from June (above economists’ forecast of 0.3 percent). That’s the biggest increase since January 2023, with the largest increase in sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers (3.6%), followed by sales at electronics and appliance stores (1.6%). The new circumstances made investors happy and came before the FED meeting. Consumers are likely to continue spending despite inflation.

Since consumer prices rose 0.2% in July, retail sales outpaced inflation in June 2024. This means (adjusted for inflation) that spending is higher in June. Compared to July 2023, retail sales rose 2.7% in July and were almost unchanged in constant 1982-1984 dollars.

For the period July 2021 – July 2024, the increase in retail sales in the last three years can be attributed to the rise in prices. This means that customers spend more dollars for the same consumption. Monthly turnover in retail and catering (adjusted for seasonal variations, differences in holidays, and trading days) increased by 15.8%. Adjusted for CPI inflation, sales nearly fell during this period but rose 0.5% over the past three years. It shows that consumers have kept their buying behavior unchanged despite the price increase.
