Razlike u ceni WTI i Brent nafte

gb english

Dvocifrena razlika u cenama WTI i Brent nafte u prvom kvartalu 2019. godine.

  • Lokacija vađenja nafte - WTI se vadi u naftnim poljima Teksasa (kao iz škriljaca), dok Brent iz Severnog mora;
  • Geopolitički - cena Brent više osetljiva na geopolitička dešavanja od cene WTI;
  • Sadržaj i sastav - lakše je prečistiti naftu koja u sebi sadrži manje sumpora (Brent 0.37%, WTI 0.24%);

A two-digit difference in the prices of WTI and Brent oil in the first quarter of 2019. This is the result of a continuing fall in WTI oil prices (or a smaller decline than the Brent price) since November 2018.

During the first quarter of 2019, the price difference between the reference values for crude oil Brent and WTI initially expanded to $8-10 per barrel, then dropped to less than $5 per barrel. Crude oil prices rose at the beginning of the year due to rising demand. The last corrections in the oil market were in mid-July 2018 after additional deliveries from Saudi Arabia, Russia and Libya. The increase in trade disputes has also opened the possibility that demand will be weakened by consumers' concerns about global growth, since the beginning of 2019 is below expected growth.

The causes of the differences in the prices of WTI and Brent Crude oil are:

  • Extraction Location - WTI is extracted from oil fields in Texas (as shale), while Brent from the North Sea;
  • Geopolitical - Brent price more sensitive to geopolitical events than WTI prices;
  • Content and composition - it is easier to refine oil containing less sulfur (Brent 0.37%, WTI 0.24%);
  • Where are they traded? - traded on oil futures contract (Brent on ICE in London, WTI on NYMEX in New York); and
  • Prices and benchmarks - WTI was previously traded at premimum to Brent, and after oil shale was discovered at a discounted to Brent, and WTI is bencmark for oil prices in the United States, while 2/3 of the other oil contracts are benchmark to Brent.
